On Christmas Day, 1837, a band of Seminoles ambushed Col. Zachary Taylor and about 1,000 men as they marched from Fort Bassinger on the west side of the Kissimmee River at the northern shore of Lake Okeechobee. |

The Second Seminole War was about two-years-old and Taylor had learned from captured Indians that a large party of Seminoles was camped to the east. |
