Taylor, later a U.S. President, had been marching since Nov. 27, 1837, when he and his men left Fort Brooke near what is now Tampa in an effort to round up the 4,000 Seminoles remaining in Florida and move them west. |

The Second Seminole War ended inconclusively, as did the Battle of Okeechobee. Both sides claimed victory, but it was clear that it was the Indians who got the better of the fight. |
